Women’s Horticulture Workshops with B4Biodiversity

Last year part of the disused space behind the community centre was transformed into a wonderful community allotment.

We have now got lots of raised beds, two polytunnels, composting bins and a shipping container for storage & somewhere to have a brew and shelter if it rains.

Our first attempt at growing produced some great results with lots of brassicas, tomatoes, salads, beans, courgettes, herbs and lots of potatoes!

Thanks to funding from Groundwork Green Skills fund (part of the Northern Network) and Liverpool Primary Care Network Wellbeing Fund we are about to start a new six-week course for women on food growing & introduction to allotments, led by Andrea Ku from B4Biodiversity.

The dates are Monday 26 Feb / Monday 4 March / Monday 11 March / Monday 18 March, Monday 25 March / break for Easter / Monday 8 April (11:00 – 2:00). Sessions are 3 hours long and will include a free lunch of homemade soup and bread prepared in the community centre’s new kitchen and made from the produce we grow.

Together we will learn how to prepare an allotment bed by making and using healthy soil, learn which crops are suitable for different parts the garden, how to sow seeds and nurture seedlings, and look after plants through to harvest time.    We will also take time to appreciate the outdoors and learn about the ecology of the inner City.

The sessions will take place mostly outdoors so please wear appropriate clothing for the weather and time of year.  We will provide all the equipment inc. your own gardening gloves. There will also be free fresh food to take home and recipes booklets.

To secure your place please email hello@kfca.co.uk or call 708 9107 or pop in to the centre and ask for Helen.

Thank you to National Lottery Awards for All, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority – Community Environment Fund, and Billiton Endowment Fund (Community Fund Merseyside) for funding the creation of the space in 2023 and Green Skills fund for funding this course free for women in Merseyside.
